I was on the Empire Builder on 9/17-9/18 traveling East. The loco was #74 the same one involved in the crash. The ride was not smooth at all especially in comparison to the other routes we traveled this month.

BEAUSABRE

Location is East end of Buelow siding - a #24 turnout that should be good for 40 mph

Some passengers reported vibration and a rough ride prior to the derailment, which would point to a failure in the running gear

Or just a normal train up till derailment.

Photos on another site show 4 cars on their sides.  Three became detached and are before the switch.

Appears to have happened at one end of the siding a mile west of Joplin, Montana. I can't tell which end.

Seems a track switch might be involved.

At least 3 cars in the pictures are on their sides.

Picture in link appears to show only the rear car on its side

Yes--west of Havre and east of Shelby. Havre is a fueling point and Shelby is a train and engine crew change point.

I am retired NP-BN-BNSF from Minneapolis and is pains me to see the cars on their sides and derailed. Three reported fatalities and many injured. Prayers to all involved.

Bad. Really bad. Terrible.

Do I assume correctly that they were on BNSF?

Still in training.
