Hurricane Ida
Posted by blue streak 1 on Friday, August 27, 2021 10:43 PM

New Orleans departures cancelled as of Saturday Aug 28.

Amtrak Advisory | Service to from New Orleans Canceled due to Forecasted Hurricane Ida

This hurrican is now predicted to become a Cat- 4 hurricane before landfall.  It appears Amtrak is not being proactive about flooding in New Orleans.  Crescent terminated in New Orleans today Friday.  No trains scheduled out of NOL Sat due to flood gates being closed.   What will happen if all equipment at NOL gets flooded and then needs repair ?

Anyone know elevation of NOL station  tracks and maintenance facility ?

Any info if NS, CSX, BNSF, UP, & KCS are moving equipment away especially locos ?

I only have one prediction.  This hurricane may surprize us with its final intensity.  The water temperature maps of the gulf are all over the map.  The hurricane could become a cat 5 or it may kinda fizzle to a cat 2.  That all dependes what track Ida takes and just a few miles one way or the other can have a big effect of its intensity. It all depends what the water temp that it passes over.

This not unexpected.  Trains to New orleans cancelled thru Wedensday.  So no departures from NOL until next day ?  Will not be surprized if these cancellations last longer ?

Landfall as a Cat 4.  NOLA levies held.  Power out.

Interestingly, coming back from St. Louis Sunday evening, the Amtrak tracker app showed a southbound CoNO, but no northbound.  I would have expected this to be the other way!

Transmission tower destroyed by Ida likely to complicate power restoration in New Orleans, experts say | Utility Dive

Suspect NOL service is going to have to wait awhile.  Power failure will probably leave NOL station dark for several weeks as not a high priority.  As well the maintenance facility.  Also diesel might be in short supply.  Potable water will be unavailable until system is up and running and has been flushed several times.

The Crescent will substain major delays southwest of Atlanta as thru New Orleans freight traffic may have to divert to along the Meredian speedway. That will mean diverts thru BHM - MEI by both NS and CSX.  CSX will have to send east coast traffic thru Manchester - Lagrange - BHM.

The reports of track problems west of NOL will limit thru NOL traffic on BNSF.  If CN and KCS lines to Baton Rouge thru NOL can be restored then not so much traffic on Meridian speedway.

Ida has caused or is causing multiple delays on the NEC from Trenton thru New Rochelle.  As NJT and MNRR suspended only Amtrak stalled there .  Trees , wires, flooding etc all causing multiple delays.

Amtrak is throwing in the towel on the NEC for today.  Probably a good idea.  Any word if north River tunnels survived without being flooded ?

SERVICE ALERT UPDATE: All service between Washington (WAS) and Boston (BOS) has been canceled for the remainder of the day. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Question is willl scheduled trains south of WASH operate ?. Believe Palmettos have been cancelled.

EDIT All NJTransit service cancelled except Atlantic city line.

EDIT -2 SEPTA Paoli line not operating. Trenton line operating. So Amtrak has problems on Paoli line.
