Santa Barbara mudslides round 2 ?
Posted by blue streak 1 on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 1:10 AM

Appears that another storm headed that way that is going to be worse than the one last month ?  Will this be another Amtrak opportunity to supply service when US-101 gets covered by a mudslide ?

Probably not quite as bad as January, Forecast call for 5 inches over about 48 hours. Hoping the slides aren't too bad as my son has a ticket for Saturday morning from Goleta.

The problem I see is the timing: the initial phase of rain saturates the ground, then the progressively heavier downpours come after the good soaking.  That is almost a prescription for severe slides all along that area.

One difference from January is that the ground may have a bit of grass growing that may be of some help in stabilizing the soil. My son said that it was raining pretty heavy after his final this afternoon. Ironically, the rains in January hit during the finals week that had been postponed from the end of the Fall 2017 quarter due to the Thomas fire.

It's a Pineapple Express system, so it should be heavy rain and warm. Slides are a big concern. SoCal is going to take the brunt of it which is a mixed blessing I guess.
