blue streak 1 runnerdude48 All of this sounds impressive but I just read on a different web site that the airlines are expected to carry 28.5 million passengers over the 12 day Thanksgiving holiday period. In other words, the airlines carry almost as many passengers in a 12 day period as Amtrak does in an entire year. Do not believe it is impressive on Amtrak's loads compared to airlines. But it is impressive given Amtrak's lack of equipment and routes. How many persons would be better served by taking surface transportation ( trains among other items ) than flying on airplanes ? There must be persons that are unable to fly a long distance due to airplanes tied up carrying passengers shorter distances that would be better served by other means ?

The Surfline is paralled by I-5, I-405 is quite a bit west for most of its route. FWIW, the Irvine station is next to the southern junction between I-5 and I-405. I-405 parallels a couple of long gone PE lines.
Traffic jams on I-405 only occur on days ending with "y".
Just saw video of Tuesday's complete gridlock on LA's I-405 freeway. Wonder how many of those in the gridlock wished they had been able to ride either Amtrak or Metro Link ? The Surfline route more or less parallels the I-405.
North bound #98 reported at Ashland with 5 coaches, 4 sleepers, diner, lounge, baggage, and D/H V-2 diner. Trip reservations had the train full. What would be the possible load if Amtrak had a good surge fleet ? Note: The fares charged on extra sleepers has the best ROI of any of the single level LD trains.
I'll tell you, for the last few years the Wednesday before Thanksgiving the old RF&P here in Richmond has been a great place for train watching. Plenty of Amtrak action and even the CSX trains have to hustle to keep the line fluid.
Latest has 3 seats NYP - BOS 20 trains Sunday and about 12 BOS - NYP on 21 trains. Note snow storm predicted during this holiday,
Just looking at the NEC the following is apparent.
On Wedensday 3 additional Northeast regional round trips both BOS <> NYP <> WASH. Interesting that there will be 47 trains from NYP <> BOS exceeding the usual 39 train limit. Quite a few already sold out.
Sunday Additional NER NYP <> WASH including 2 RTs with NJ Transit and MARC equipment each. NYP <> BOS with 41 total trains. NYP - BOS completely sold out. Including a couple extra Acelas and NERs.
