Amtrak Return to Historic Ft. Madison (IA) Depot

“I think it’s time we put this ‘Field of Dreams’ to bed,” said Fort Madison City Council member Rusty Andrews.


With full agreement from the other council members present, the city approved the contract to be sent to Amtrak to relocate the Amtrak Station to the Old Santa Fe Depot......"

This would definitely be a good thing for Ft Madison. The current Amtrak station out at the BNSF yard was always a railroad convenience rather than for the benefit of passengers. 

The Santa Fe Super Chief made a stop at the Ft Madison depot and at Shopton (today's Amtrak station in Ft Madison) for crew change/railroad related needs I presume even if that stop was listed in the public timetable as well.

I just looked in a 1943 Guide; both the Super Chief and El Capitan stopped in Shopton--and not in Fort Madison.

I would rather see Amtrak stop at an old Historic Depot such as pictured in the first post than seeing it stop at a modern concrete and glass contraption.     I think the old stone depots are classy and give a great first impression on a community that spends the money to keep them in service.    Just like a well kept airport does the same vs one that is falling apart.
