Passenger trains such as the CZ get rerouted to other routes from time to time due to track maintenance, repairs, etc.

It will move back to it's original route after track work is completed.

From what I understand, there is extensive tie replacement going on on the Moffat Route.

They mention on the Amtrak web site about temporary schedule changes on the route and relate it to UP track work on the line.    I would guess since the line is primarily single track, they have a larger maintenance window if they temporarily close the route then try to work around the trains.    In respect to Amtrak, probably a lot cheaper to shut them down and reroute Amtrak than it is to keep a 25-50 worker track gang waiting while the meter runs on their pay.

The MofW gangs that today's railroads use to maintain their track are highly mechanized and require track time to get all the machines involved in peforming their functions.  I was told by my former employer's MofW personnel that it takes about 2 hours for work to progress to where all machines are performing their function.  By the same token, it also takes 2 hours when the day's 'end point' is reached for all the machines to complete their functions and get to the end point.  These types of gangs require 10 to 12 hour days to get their most effective production value.  They cannot clear to pass trains.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

i checked the Amtrak notifications and saw no notice of the reroute. What is going on along the DRG route thru the Rockies?
