Don't know any particulars about this BNSF situation.
On CSX 15/20 years ago the CSX Main Frame computer system got infected with a virus that affected the communications lines of other computer systems that were connected to and exchanged data with the Main Frame. The virus busy'd up the comm lines to the computer systems to the point that subordinate computers ie. the Computer Aided Dispatching System computer crashed, and crashed repeatedly every time the CADS system was rebooted. Without the benefit of the CADS computer system Dispatchers were not able to line switches and signals, issue track occupancy authorities or track the trains on their territory. It took the 'tech geeks' about 12-14 hours to discover what was actually happening and to devise a 'work around' to restore a level of operations until a complete fix could be devised and implemented. The work around was to sever communications between the Main Frame and the CADS computers. With the links severed no train sheet data (crew names, power, loading etc.) would pass from the Main Frame to CADS. Train Messages and train movement information would not pass from CADS to the Main Frame.
CSX Rules require Train Messages to print out on designated Train Message Printer or on Fax machines with the notation 'transmitted by CSX Technofax' at the bottom of the pages. These methods can only be accessed from the Main Frame.
The work around was to print the Train Messages out on printers in the Dispatch Center and manually fax them to the proper destination faxes. CSX Rule then required the Train Messages to be confirmed with the Dispatch Center by repeating them word for word to a Dispatcher over the telephone. All available extra train dispatchers were called in to perform the repeating function.
After about 48 hours the permanent fix was formulated and installed and operations returned to normal
