Sometimes in certain areas where double tracking is not possible, a single track mainline may be your only option.
Single track mainlines are cheaper than double track mainlines.
MikeF90Check out the map of the LOSSAN corridor, southern portion. When Metrolink was formed ~25 years ago they jumped on the single track parts from Fullerton to Laguna Niguel, all is 2MT now. DTLA to Fullerton is 3MT except for a one mile gap to be filled soon.
I've ridden on it a few times, one of my favorite hotels, Hyatt Grand Manchester is in San Diego and I love flying out and staying there for a 4 day weekend every so many years.
Anyways, surprised it is single tracked with all the passenger trains on it. Not to mention the BNSF Frieght trains which operate at night.
CMStPnPGo figure, I thought the line was double tracked already.

South of San Juan Capistrano the route runs along the environmentally sensitive and NIMBY intensive coast. The portions next to San Clemente and Torrey Pines likely will never be double tracked.
Same goes for the corridor north of Chatsworth. The best we can hope for is longer sidings and CTC north of Goleta - and bring back the Coast Daylight!

MikeF90The California Transportation Commission web site may have more details, but they are totally hidden in agenda minutes. The OCTA maintained LOSSAN web site is similarly packed with project non-details. OTOH the San Diego county (SANDAG) website has been keeping track of their counties projects. Lots of single track and bridges to be upgraded. In built up areas, $50 million doesn't go very far. The Rosecrans/Marquardt grade separation in Santa Fe Springs will be over $100M by itself .....

From a transparency perspective, it's perhaps a bit disappointing? Oh well.
I agree with you on everything else. SANDAG has an amazing website.
mvsWhere exactly on the Surf Line will this go?
