On that note, I think it would be really cool if Amtrak built some retro architecture stations resembing those built in the late 1800's early 1900's. First candidate location would be the New Center Area of Detroit, MI.

I'd settle for some retro brick stations in the style of C&NW architect Charles Sumner Frost. Some are still extant.

Retro "architecture" has been responsible for some real disasters primarily because it isn't original. On the other hand, Milwaukee's station was built in 1964 and has an airy practical design that really looks good.

If you think about it, many styles are merely retoolings of older styles. The very successful Georgian and Beaux-Artes (neo-classical - eg., Grand Central) styles, were both based on classical Greco-Roman styles. Spanish mission style was a 20th C. derivation used with great success, notably LA Union Station. Why wouldn't a modern style inspired by Frost work? The 1964 Milwaukee station may be airy, but lacks any dramatic styling, unlike the new Berlin Hauptbahnhof, for example, which is quite dramatic, airy and functional. Milwaukee's just another steel and glass box.
