Hurricane Matthew passenger preparations and aftermaths..
Posted by blue streak 1 on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 12:13 PM

Matthew now showing the cone of uncertanity now taking a bead on Myrtle Beach, SC. CSX will certainly be shutting down both the "A" , & "S" lines just when is now unknown.  So all Silver service trains will get cancelled.

Now what will happen in MIAMI is open to speculation.  Will Amtrak and Tri-Rail move their rolling stock out of MIA maybe to Sanford ?  Next when will Carolinian be cancelled ?  Although too soon are the commuter rails and subways making preliminary plans as well ?  We don't want another "sandy" disaster..

------EDIT------Just checked weather channel.  cone of uncertainy is now showing over New York City,  Hope that is wrong ! !

Anyone near the cone fill up your cars with gasoline now.  Atlanta just yesterday has all the gas stations without shortages.

Well Amtrak is getting ready for CSX closings.  Meteor of 5th will operate NYP - Orlando and Star of the 5th will operate NYP - Tampa. Only wonder what disposition of equipment will be ?   Their counterparts will operate out of MIA 10/05 and suspect those will be long trains to evacuate all available equipment and evacuatees.  Still some coach available

Star and Meteor of the 6th will not operate.  NYP - MIA 10/09 first scheduled to operate but ------- ???

This appears to be only the first wave of cancellations ?

Some bad situations Saturday for Amtrak.  79 between Selma and Raleigh was traveling at the NS flash flood restrictions.  Stopped short of a downed tree and then just beyond was a wash out with tracks hanging in the air.  There but for the grace of NS speed ristrictions ----------

Piedmont between Raleigh and Cary stopped for downed tree.  Difficulty getting to train due to it stopped across from prison.

Not much service Monday and Tuesday.  No Meteor.   Star only RT MIA - Winter Park, Fl. Carolinian and Piedmont RRaleigh - CLT only.  Carolinian also NYP - Richmond RVR.  No serice Raleigh - Richmond with both NS and CSX "A" line out of service.

Crescent  NYP  <>  CLT  is sold out Monday in coach and almost no sleeper space. Carolinian still showing operating Tuesday but Crescent still almost sold out  Both days just some BC available..

We have to wonder with the Crescent sold out why Amtrak does not take a coach or two and run them RT NYP <>  CLT  to carry cancelled Carolinian passengers ?       a

CSX has some lines open so we can know what Amtrak rains are possible.  Evidently the "A" line north of Savannah is a real problem

CSX Customer Advisory – HURRICANE MATTHEW UPDATE: CSX Restores Florida Mainline Service As Washouts Delay Other Areas

CSX has fully restored lines of service in Florida. By Monday evening October 10th, CSX operations expects to restore service to the following areas:
  • Jacksonville to Savannah, GA
  • Augusta, GA to Savannah, GA
  • Rocky Mount, NC to Hamlet, NC

Commercial power for the main line from Savannah, GA to Pembroke, NC is not yet available. In response, engineering crews are deploying over 1,000 generators to power crossing gates, defect detectors and wayside signals. Additionally, crews are working through extensive washout conditions and flooded areas on our rail infrastructure across North and South Carolina while assessing the extent of damage on the following

That prevents Silver Service and Auto Train.

With flooding not  having reached max crest how can anyone predict how much damage to the "A" line and consequence damage repair ?

It may be that the "S" line from Charleston <> Cary / Raleigh and NS Raleigh <> Selma may obtain service availability first but who knows ?  If so  how much traffic can detour by way of Raleigh only the RRs know ?
