So I see from youtube, Amtrak did another Charter Train to Louisville for the Kentucky Derby using  AAPRCO equipment.....

Two units and 5 cars - Amtrak must have an excess of power.

Well, lol, allegedly.....

Amtrak maintains a registry of private cars that includes their weight, inspections, length, etc.

They assign power based on weight of the Private Cars <Amtrak says>.    Adding a locomotive also boosts Amtraks per mile charge revenue substantially.    So pick whichever point of view you like better.    

Mine is the latter but I am trying hard not to get under anyones skin by implying that Amtrak is financially raping the Private Car owners for carrying their cars around because that HP to weight ratio is overkill unless one or more of the cars was built with lead.

The other hypothesis I have is they are using the locomotives to power HEP for one car and so at least one locomotive needs to run idle overnight and perhaps the second locomotive is assigned so they do not have to refuel???

My hypothisis is that they don't need to find a turntable or wye to turn the locomotive if they use a pair back to back.

That I am aware of, Private cars are moved by Amtrak on a flat rate per mile charge per car - that charge doesn't vary with the number of cars and is payable for each car.  There may be additional charges for locomotives, when the number of cars reach and/or are specified to be operated as Special train. 

As info, for schedule keeping purposes and Amtrak incentive payments, Amtrak & my carrier have agreed that a single engine can maintain schedules with 8 cars.  For more than 8 cars additional 'schedule allowance' goes into the calculation of On Time performance.

Amtrak's charges posted 10/1/14 indicate the following charges apply for the movement of private cars when attached to a regularly scheduled train:

First private car - $2.70/mile

Additional cars - $2.10/mile

Should the cars require an additional locomotive be added - $4.25/mile

Of course, there are additional charges for yardage, sanitary dump, inspections and so forth.  

None of that directly pertains to the movement of a special train in a non-scheduled enviroment.  However, it gives you a idea of the dollars involved.
