Hotel lobbies are wonderful places to wait for trains. They have lots of comfortable furniture, outlets for re-charging things, and lots more to offer the layover train passenger. I completely agree with Dragoman that schlepping my self and my bags up to 44th & Madison seems a bit far to go for such a passenger's purposes if one is using Penn Station. May I offer this suggestion?
The New Yorker Hotel ,on the corner of 34th Street & Eighth Avenue, is a fine place to wait if one is using Penn Station and isn't eligible to use the Acela Lounge there. Because it's a 1,000 room hotel, and a nice one, too, they will never notice, nor care about, a person with suitcases who just sits himself down anywhere in their comodious lobby. There are chairs and couches to sit on, plenty of charging stations (everyone is looking at a hand held device these days, it seems), and a choice of two restaurants, both with bars, right off the hotel lobby. One can check one's bags into the hotel's trunk room (about $1 per bag, before tip) and then walk hither and yon unencumbered. Or, one can take one's luggage right into the Trattoria Restaurant and find plenty of room with no one batting an eye about one's suitcases. There, watching sports TV or looking at my laptop, a nursed beer can take a long time, you know. The other restaurant at The New Yorker Hotel is the 24-hour Tick Tock Diner, which is a first-class example of that genre.
While sitting in the New Yorker's lobby, one can use their free wireless connection to the Internet. So sit back, enjoy the people-watching, the comfy furniture, the free wireless, and a choice of two good restaurants, plus a secure check room. And Penn Station is across the street.
" a nursed beer can take a long time, you know." One time I nursed a beer so long I had to put her thru college!
