I saw Johnny Cash at Carnegie Hall, and, of course, the interior of Carnegie Hall. $40 a ticket seemed expensive but worth it.

Very good.

Twenty-seven years ago, my wife and I took in the Salisbury Hotel, Montauk, and the Met. Up early, take the Long Island oto Montauk and back, a taxi to the Met for Madama Butterfly (SRO), and a walk back to the Salisbury.

Amtrak Service Levels Restored on Wednesday, Jan. 27

Amtrak thanks passengers and employees

Jan. 26, 2016
4:00 P.M. EST

Effective Jan. 27, Amtrak will restore full schedules for Acela Express, Northeast Regional, other services between Boston and Washington D.C./Virginia and points to and from the Southeast and Midwest.

Amtrak is proud to have stood alone among transportation operators - airlines and others - in continuing to operate services on behalf of our customers throughout the storm in spite of the challenges posed by the weather for our employees to continue operations.

With the operating plan for Tuesday we can see where freight RRs are still not cleared.  Probably Sar route will be last to open ? Someone check Meteor to see if it has additional cars.

Amtrak Service Levels Further Increase in Restoration Plan for Tuesday, Jan. 26

Almost 80 percent of normal schedules New York-Washington; Nearly complete New York-Boston service; Full Keystone Service; More service resuming south and west of Washington/Virginia

Jan. 25, 2016

7:00 p.m. ET

Amtrak will continue a modified schedule in mid-Atlantic region, with most services operating between 80 and 100 percent of normal levels, following a winter storm.

Most Acela Express, Northeast Regional and other services between Boston and Washington D.C., will operate, with full restoration of Keystone Service between Harrisburg, Pa., and New York, modified Northeast Regional service between Washington and points in Virginia, including Lynchburg, Norfolk and Newport News.

A few other Amtrak services are canceled or truncated, including:

·         Capitol Limited (Washington, D.C. – Chicago), Trains 29 & 30 will operate only between Chicago and Pittsburgh on Jan. 26
·         Carolinian (Charlotte, N.C. – New York), Trains 79 & 80, will operate between Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C., with other sections of Trains 79 & 80 operating between New York and Washington on Jan. 26
·         Palmetto (New York – Savannah, Ga.), Trains 89 & 90, will operate only between New York and Washington on Jan. 26
·         Silver Star (New York – Miami), Trains 91 & 92, will operate only between Miami and Jacksonville on Jan. 26

As soon as possible this Tuesday, Amtrak will determine plans for Wednesday, Jan. 27, for the Northeast Corridor (Boston-New York-Washington) and for additional service restoration south and west of Washington/Virginia.

BEAUTIFUL   THANIKS    SEND IT TO AMTRAK

BUT YOU MIGHT WISH TO REPLACE "CRASHING" WITH "PLOWING."

No, my post was just a bit of doggerel that was inspired by the video of the engine in the snow that Streak posted.

Crashing through the snow

On the railroad track–

Over the rails we go,

Leaving miles in back.

Bells on engine ring,

Warning all around;

Listen to the ding-ding-ding

That keeps us safe and sound!

All this time I believed that mass transit and rail transit was supposed to be all weather.    Now I hear reports of Washington Metro parking trains in tunnels "to protect them".......really?   They are that fragile?

With 30" snow and 50mph winds predicted, why would you not park the equipment in tunnels?  Snow could blow under and totally encase the car and freeze it to the track, and thus block snow removal efforts.

MARC not operating Monday.  May be partially because government shut down.  Or maybe CSX and Amtrak still somewhat snowed under ?

Wll Amtrak can get to / from NYP but all MTA surface lines cancelled: That is LIRR, MNRR & Nycity ground and above groundservices.

MTA Winter Storm Update

A major snow storm continues to impact the MTA service area.

Due to deteriorating road conditions and poor visibility, NYC Transit and MTA Bus local, limited and express bus service is suspended. Access-A-Ride service is also suspended.

Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad and above-ground NYC Subway service is now suspended due to deteriorating weather conditions and concerns for customer and employee safety. NYC Subway service will operate in underground portions only.

Crews and snow fighting equipment have been dispatched and are working to keep platforms and rails clear of ice and snow. We advise customers if at all possible to remain at home during the duration of this storm.

Train arrival data on the MTA web site and on third-party mobile apps will not reflect actual service availability.

Going to change thread title.

So there is no way to travel the NEC except on Amtrak with all air, bus, auto traffic shut down.  It would seem that we need to write all or congress criters pointing out the need for balanced transportation anad how Amtrak could operate although at a reduced level.  Point out that more infrastructure work ( = money ) would probably allow more service.

Here in the frozen north, it's a nice clear, sunny day. No snow in the forecast, about 25 degrees. A little later, off to the pub for a Robbie Burns dinner. Haggis and single malt for all!

We've got a least a foot or more of snow on the ground here in Richmond VA and it's still coming down, untypically dirty weather for this part of the country, even in January.

Anyone else trapped inside this weekend?

CSX bulletin that shows many subs closed.

CSX Customer Advisory - UPDATE: Winter Storm Jonas Impact

Please be advised that Winter Storm Jonas is impacting several regions of CSX, from the Great Lakes to the mid-Atlantic and Southeast. In the most heavily storm-impacted regions, trains are being held – some due to road conditions preventing crews to on-duty points, and others pending improved weather.  The associated weather conditions are affecting the CSX network in the following areas:

  • Huntington Division:  Heavy snow across the division with 8 -24” on the ground across various subdivisions with the New River subdivision currently under two feet of snow.
  • Richmond, VA:  Trains being held or moving slowly due to snow.
  • Washington, D.C./Baltimore:  Continuing to experience the heaviest snow fall amounts and expected to move toward New York City this afternoon.
  • Nashville Terminal:  Trains are staged at surrounding terminals pending improved weather. The heavy snow has passed with Casky Yard receiving the heaviest accumulation of 8-12” on the ground and 5-8” over the rest of the division as flurries continue.
  • Florence Division:  Snow and freezing temperatures across the division.
  • Atlanta Division:  Rain, sleet, snowy mixture across the division.  Light snow between Atlanta and Chattanooga, Tenn., and between Atlanta and Greenwood, S.C., with icy road conditions near Greenwood.
  • Great Lakes Division:  Light snow in Cleveland and extending across the Erie West Subdivision with 1-2” forecasted.
  • Louisville Division:  Snow has subsided leaving 5-7” of snow on the ground in Louisville and 1-3” in Cincinnati.  Blowing snow with drifts up to three feet deep in the Louisville area are affecting normal operations on the Mainline and Texas subdivisions.

If ( a big if ) There is as much snow as predicted and the wind blows as some say----- How will Amtrak plow the snow ?  There could maybe be major drifts.

The big snow storm Amtrak is going to work where possible.
Posted by blue streak 1 on Thursday, January 21, 2016 7:03 PM

For Friday and Saturday all LD trains southbound south of WASH are cancelled.  This includes Auto Train and Capital east of Pittsburgh.  Regionals  mostly still scheduled.  It appears that Amtrak, CSX and NS are worried about the icing and high winds in the NC area of their trains.  Since NS and especially CSX have not trimmed their ROW trees there may be high probability that there will be trees lying on the tracks ?

Amtrak's heavy tree trimming ( fought  by the NIMBYS ) on the NEC appears to give Amtrak confidence that it can continue to operate on the NEC.  There are already some Acela cancellations.

A benefit of these LD cancellations might allow Amtrak to dispatch the surplus diesels to strategic point along the NEC ?

Now the first real test of ACS-64s in heavy snow begins.
