Flooding bustitutions and just plain cancellations
Posted by blue streak 1 on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 2:48 PM

Reported that City of New Orleans will bus between Memphis and Carbondale.

Reported that Texas Eagle will bus between St. Louis and Little Rock.

Appears this will last for some time. These buses are due to reported flooding of RR tracks.  Will be interesting how freight RRs handle their detours.  If these routes stay flooded for a long time will Amtrak try to have their crews qualify on an alternate route ?  Obvisouly RRs cannot afford to provide pilots and may be qualifying other crews on detour routes.

Missouri River runners reported not operating today.  No buses ?

Now reported to be closed on a day to day basis.

Some Interstates are closed in the St.Louis area.

Came in Monday from Chicago on the Southwest Chief. Train was early. Bad storm snow and ice shut down KCI airport and I-70. Had problems getting a cab from Union Station. Oh well, Amtrak got me there.

For what it may be worth, the National Weather Service 'River Line' has been predicting a Mississippi River flood stage at Memphis of just 4 feet under the level of 2011 (more than 43 feet; don't remember the exact number but will check when I listen to the weather radio next).  That indicates a large surge in the river system to the north before the crest gets here, and probably will lead to flood precautions further south in a few more days.

Flooding to the west into Arkansas is normal with the river that high, and I am unsurprised this might reach enough of the Texas Eagle route to make bustitution a wise precaution now.
