Sunday had a perfect day.
Another weekend almost perfect CHI arrivals. Only 22 late due to loco problems ?
In addition to the end of run padding, some trains have enroute padding at a major station as well. For example, today the eastbound Builder was 44 minutes late at St. Cloud but only 3 late into St. Paul. Also today, the southbound City was 30 minutes late at Newbern but on time at Memphis.
Amtrak does better because the railroads are doing worse. Is this good news?
CSSHEGEWISCH That's not a new concept. CB&Q had recovery time in its Twin Zephyr schedules and I'm sure that other railroads did the same.

Anyone that schedules running time as schedule time will have all their trains running late. Doo Doo happens and you must make allowances. Beyond Doo Doo there are known situations that will delay trains, meets, track availability at terminals account other trains etc. etc. etc.
All scheduled transportation has allowances built into the schedules - if every thing goes perfectly - you arrive early; if the normal doo doo happens - you will be near on time; if big DOO DOO happens - you will be late. Applies to planes, trains, automobiles, busses and ships.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
If you compare the times between various pairs of stations, you will often find that there was padding/recovery time built into the schedules.
A year and a half ago, coming home on #5, we left Provo 8:30 late, and arrived in Salt Lake City 7:45 late--the fastest that I had ever traveled between the two cities (44 miles). the schedule allows 1:39; we made it in 0:54. There is a lot of slow running from Sandy on up to the station.

blue streak 1Even though 29 & 49 are arriving CHI close to on time it appears only because of the Englewood overpass. Trains are leaving South Bend consistently 20 - 30 minutes late.
That's just the slop in the schedule. Amtrak calls is "recovery time"

CHI had a great day today only 1 late all of 2 minutes. Yesterday at CHI and NYP very bad due to east coast delays. From Train orders here is today's CHI arrivals

#4 - 17 mins early. #6 - 28 mins early. #8 - 25 mins early. #22 - 10 mins early. #29 - 5 mins early. #49 - 2 mins late. Left New York 39 mins late. #851 - 18 mins early. #58 - 18 mins early.
EDIT: Even though 29 & 49 are arriving CHI close to on time it appears only because of the Englewood overpass. Trains are leaving South Bend consistently 20 - 30 minutes late.
Last Monday after Christmas, arrived 15 minutes early in Kansas City on the Westbound Southwest Chief. Remarkable considering an ice storm had hit K.C. and Eastern Kansas. KCI airport had shut down and I-70 was closed. Getting a cab from Union Station to near Liberty, Mo. was a problem, however.
Sunday Jan 3rd all NYP early

Amazing isn't it! When there is not competition for a scarce resource (track time) trains can move at track speed over most of their entire route.
Wedensday arrivals NYP were good with the latest #48 19 minutes late. That of course does not include #92 which got cancelled north of Columbia due to the collision with an auto that disabled loco(s).
Fair use: From train orders all trains arrived Chicago early today Saturday Dec 26th.
#4 - 30 mins early. #6 - 15 mins early. #8 - 23 mins early. #22 - 30 mins early. #29 - 33 mins early. #49 - 33 mins early. #51 - 34 mins early. #58 - 4 mins early.
CHI Friday 25th latest was #4 (9 minutes late ) to 42 minutes early of 851. Now that seems to indicate that there needs to tighten up the 851 / 51 schedule.
NYP -- pending
CHI had a good day Thursday except for Cal Z #6 arrived 7 hours late led by freight unit..
NYP don't expect any good arrivals. The rainy weather has slowed everything down. Some parts of Georgia over 8" of rain including this poster.
Tuesday # 8 at CHI & # 98 a NYP only trains over 1 hour late.
Monday CHI only 4 & 8 1 & 2 hrs late respectively. NYP all only 18 min or less late except 98 1:30 late which seems to be taking a hit every day this month.
68 & 80 30 -55 minutes late. All others on time or at most 20 minutes late. Must be lower freight traffic ?
Perhaps we are at a sweet spot on the annual cycle of rail activity. The maintenance gangs are done with the heavy work for the winter, but as yet there has not been really major snow events.
All trains arrived on time at CHI today except Train 8. ~1:40 late.
