Possible lighting strike shuts down Amtrak service PVD - BOS.  MBTA some lines down due to signal problems that ma have cut signals ?

Forest Hils where the fire happened is on the Amtrak BOS  - PVD line and is the branching junction of Needham lines.

There is another line south of Forest hills junction at Readville junction called the Fairmount line which goes straight to Boston south station.  Amtrak & MBTA used this line when electrification was being installed to speed up installation.  Unfortunately it is not electrified which many posters have said would be a great alternate.

MBTA can use the Fairmount line with their diesel trains until all signal problems are fixed. Back Bay will be missed.  But what can Amtrak do but cancel ?

Was that a problem with IATSE local 23, or was it local 11?

Amtrak can and should borrow diesels from it's own fleet..I live quite near the NEC in the Providence RI area and it is not unheard of to see Genesis units or Work locomotives leading Amtrak trains when there are electrical system issues or during poor weather..

If the signalling system is down however, nothing moves regardless of what the motive power is..
