It is sad that anyone should be so unaware of the danger of walking on a railroad track.
It is also sad that whoever wrote the story does not know the title of the person who is operating the engine--saying that the conductor saw the trespasser and blew the horn.

It would seem that Engineers might need help with coping with the emotional stress incurred from these accidents which they are powerless to prevent. I feel for them. I recall one talking about seeing a child looking at him just before the collision. That would have left me needing counseling. It is clear that these people either are too desperate to care or too dumb to know the consequences of their action.

You do realize that most outsiders would think keeping body counts like this is pretty warped?

Not just outsiders. I think it's pretty macabre, too.

It's a big problem. Since 9-12-2001, 48 persons have been killed in the US by some sort of terrorists. We spend billions on homeland security. However, more than 7,200 pedestrians have been fatally struck by trains in the United States since 1997. An additional 6,400 have been injured. Each year on average about 500 are killed.

Add to that the large number killed annually in vehicles in grade crossing accidents.
http://oli.org/about-us/news/collisions-casulties
One difference being killed by a terrorist and being killed while walking the tracks is that the deceased had a lot more to with the outcome of the latter. Compared with the number of deaths due to other lifestyle choices, the number of pedestrians killed by trains is pretty small.
Granted there are some cases such as the signal maintainer fiasco in Chicago where the fault was clearly on the RR as opposed to the driver/pedestrian.
Lives are lives. We should be spending and doing more to prevent unnecessary accidents, rather than dismiss their deaths so callously.
One recent action to prevent unneccessary accidents was Gov. Walker's line item veto of the change in Wisc Tresspassing law that applied to RR's. Along those lines, a much stricter enforcement of tresspassing laws would go a long way to reduce the number of "pedestrian" deaths along RR ROW's. Fencing the ROW is another option, however the surfing crowd in my area is against fencing as it makes for a longer walk for those parking on San Elijo Ave to get to Swami's.
On a related note, the Palo Alto school district was having a number of high school students committing suicide by train (this is Caltrain territory). The city responded by having a police car watching the crossing from 6am to 4am, a student waited until after 4am to wait for the next train. The city responded to that by having 24 hour protection. The question is who is the responsible party for paying for the police time? Caltrain, the city of Palo Alto or the Palo Alto school disctrict? A follow on is what prompted these kids to commit suicide (which is clearly not Caltrain's responsibility).
