Canadian Woes
Posted by Toronto Fan on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 2:26 PM

The recent spate of CN derailments in northern Ontario has played havoc with VIA's Canadian. I made it into Toronto on March 7th on the last eastbound Canadian to operate this month. Now, wouldn't it seem obvious that VIA would have a contingency plan in place with CP to use their Toronto to Winnipeg line? However, what's equally obvious, is that no such plan is in place. What a shame for those of us who want to believe that the Canadian actually provides a service and is more than a railfan curiosity.

I believe the Harper government via VIA really wants that train gone. Period. Over the 12 years I have taken her from Toronto to Vancouver, the decline in this train is obvious and disheartening.

Agree. The 1992 (I believe) introduction of "Silver and Blue" was the highwater mark of this train under VIA management. I still find the journey enjoyable, but the perks and amenities have certainly declined over the years.
