Generator cars on electric trains
Posted by aegrotatio on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 8:22 PM

I was watching a few of those wonderful videos from India and Pakistan and noticed an interesting trend.  The trains are, of course, amazingly lengthy.  The other thing I noticed is that most electric trains have one or two power cars (generator cars) on the.

What's the reason?  I can guess a few, like consist length for cabling, lack of HEP on the engine, or perhaps reserving all the prime mover's energy for traction, or maybe just plain neglect.
