What Wrong Amtrak 30 Today running 15 Hours late Today the Capitol Limited??
Since one of Amtrak's computer systems crash and the Dixielandsoftware site hasn't been updated since 0725 this morning - there could be hundreds of reasons. Best bet is problems on NS West of Pittsbugh.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
Not sure, but there have been issues with ACS-64s not playing nicely with the P42DCs in the past. The CZ is how they are shipped to the NEC from the Siemens plant in California.
Anybody know why the CZ was nearly 7 hours late leaving Emeryville?
Friends were on the Maple Leaf from Niagara Falls, Can to NY 2 weeks ago. (462 miles) A broken rail in Canada put the train 1.5 hours late into Niagara. The train lost its window on CSX and ended up just under 3 hours late to NY. Had a friend on the Silver Meteor last week, NY to Jacksonville.(977 miles) Train arrived in J-ville 20 minutes late. All the time was lost on the NEC, which Amtrak owns! Timing is everything when running a passenger train on a freight railroad.
Late Trains getting later - when trains get significantly late on a territory they encounter scheduled freight traffic that they were designed to have missed if operated in the On Time window - the same schedule degradation happens to freight trains that operate out of their window. The biggest problem facing all carriers today with the increases in 'unscheduled' business is that all windows are having traffic of all varieties and the 'system' is devolving into an unmitigated mess. Throw in some trackwork, weather and signal issues to season to taste.
Well, the sun has risen in the west, the lion has lain down with the lamb and the Greenland ice cap has melted. Furthermore, the Zephyr that left Emeryville on the 2nd 3:04 late is now reported at Ottumwa 1:44 late.
It's unlikely that a decision of that kind would be left to the onboard staff. The decision would be made by someone much higher up the chain: Someone who doesn't have to stand there and face the angry passengers. Hopefully somebody higher up cares.

Dakguy201 I wonder if any attempt was made to restock the diner for the additional time enroute.

If the dining car manager from hell was in charge -- a woman some of us, including Fred Frailey, have experienced on the Zephyr -- it would make no difference. No lunch for you!

Someone would have to care about customer service.

The eastbound California Zephyr left Emeryville 6 hours and 52 minutes late on the 30th. It continued to lose time (the Salt Lake/Denver portion being the major problem), and arrived in Chicago this morning 15 hours 14 minutes late. I wonder if any attempt was made to restock the diner for the additional time enroute.
