The NewsWire story says the derailment happened at the switch, which was some kind of special switch. I wonder if it was a spring switch. I could see how it would speed up the passenger train reversing at the summit.
Indeed! The passenger cars are IIRC largely made of wood, and so are light compared to the locomotives.

The dynamics of inertia are the primary explanation for everything 'strange' one sees at a derailment site.

In that fourth picture, how on earth did that rail get pushed so far to the side? Did something snag it and push it, causing it to buckle?
