The BLACK DIAMOND was discontinued in May 1959.  The last LV train over this route was probably the MAPLE LEAF, an overnite NY-Toronto train.

Click on the link above for information on a spectacular opportunity to ride a train on some rails that have not seen scheduled passenger service since 1961 … or ever.  The Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley Chapter of the NRHS and the Reading & Northern RR will be operating on May 3 over their lines in their northern territory.

The train, led by SD38s will begin in Duryea, heading north to Scranton via the yard in Taylor, and taking the DL&W branch to the end of the Keyser Valley branch.  Upon returning to Duryea, the train heads northwest to  and through the Vosburg Tunnel, on the original Lehigh Valley RR mainline. The Black Diamond was the last passenger train to run on this line in 1961. Neither LV, Conrail nor Reading & Northern have not run passengers past Tunkhannock until this trip. The train returns to Pittston yard, to head over the mountain cutoff, built by the Lehigh Valley RR for freight-only service.  The turn-around point on the cutoff will be the former CNJ Penbscot yard. Passenger trains only began running on this line in 1998.  It will make for a fantastic day (10 AM - 7 PM) of railroading in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
