Pam (interesting user name),

Earlier this year I was tasked with bringing one of our cars east on the Lake Shore. We backed in and departed from track 26, the last stub track before the run through track, 28.

If the train is backing straight in, it is coming from the coach yards and will get to the correct track as it goes under the office building. If it is coming around a curve, that is the mainline of the old Burlington Route. The baggage car on the rear is for the New York Section (# 49). #449 the Boston section is behind the locomotives. I rode from Chicago to Boston on # 449 this summer. You can't see the actual station tracks from outside the station but they do fan out under the office building so trains can reach the longer platforms on the East side of the station.

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, send them along!!!!

Chicago Union Station II
Posted by pamelapeterson on Monday, November 25, 2013 7:41 AM

Just came across a picture/photo of Amtrak's  Lake Shore Limited backing down into Chicago Union Station[CUS]. The consist included twelve(12) cars plus two(2) locomotives.

What track(s) would it be backing down into??? From some data I have at hand, it doesn't appear that all tracks can handle a consist this long??? Also, the picture/photo also showed a Baggage Car as the last car in the consist??? Any ideas as if this #49 is terminating @ CUS or preparing to go East??? Besides this Blog, is there any other sources around that might be able to answer inquiries like these??? Maybe I should just purchase a set of tickets & ride #49 from Boston to Chicago to learn more about The Lake Shore Limited. Thanx for any & all feedback...

Respectfully
