Sounds like a great trip and lots of good advice so far. To that I would add a couple of things.

First, be sure to awaken early enough before arriving at Portland OR to enjoy the sunrise passage along the Columbia River gorge. It begins about an hour out of Pasco WA and gets better as the train finds it way west.

Second, as recommended by others, the best part of the Starlight's trip is that portion from Cuesta Grade (descending horseshoe turn to the left) just before San Luis Obispo CA and on to the south to Santa Barbara CA. Some of the prettiest coastal scenery in the country after traversing Vandenberg AFB. A stay in Santa Barbara too, should be wonderful this time of year.

Finally, if you are traveling in either a roomette or bedroom, you will have access to the California Parlour Car, a first class exclusive on the Starlight. This car, its service and amenities are not to be missed. This addition to the Starlight is unlike anything anywhere else, and the cars date from their original ATSF heritage. Truly, one of the highlights of traveling this corridor.

Sounds like a wonderful experience lined up. Have enjoyed the Builder and Starlight a number of times and hope the same for you!

The El Capitan lounge cars that provide the "Pacific Parlour Car" service were refurbished at Beech Grove about three years ago. They do provide a unique experience.
