Amtrak reservations - high quality
Posted by blue streak 1 on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 2:45 PM

Had to use an Amtrak agent to build a complicated USA rail pass for wife and self. Consisted of 10 legs over a 30 day period.  Very pleasantly surprized. Have nothing but  highest praise.  Expected it to take over an hour but only took 35 minutes.  Got most accomodations requested but as everyone posts the Empire Builder overbooked.  Finally found 2 coach seats and on waiting list for a sleeper.

Trip will start Sep 7th on Crescent to WASH.  We are to visit several of our children.  I found this reservation experience much better than my last few airline res.

Good for you, blue. I'd say you lucked out, especially if you just booked. I also have a longish trip coming up in Sept., 6 legs over two weeks, and booked the space, all roomettes, way back in December. Did do it via Amtrak's web site and printed out my own e-ticket. Sounds like you got excellent service from your Amtrak rep, though.

Usually I have done well in arranging long trips that used Railpasses, always talking with an Amtrak agent. Last year I had the only difficulty in obtaining sleeper accommodations, but a day or two before I left I was able to get a bedroom on the leg that had previously been sold out. Usually I am able to make my reservations well in advance, but that time I was traveling about a month after I made the reservation.
