Derailment apparently happend early in the rush hour blocking the tunnels and causing Amtrak and NJT to have delays, too, because of some trainsets having to move from Sunnyside. LIRR urged passengers to use subway's 2&3 to Brooklyn for more trains while providing only one train an hour to each of its branches (Port Washington, Ronkonkoma, Babylon, Hempstead, Long Beach, W. Hempstead, and Far Rockaway) .  This was still in effect at 10PM last night.

LIRR Is On/Close to Schedule During Midday
LIRR service is currently operating on or close to schedule. For tonight’s rush hour, customers should anticipate train cancellations and delays due to Monday evening's derailment inside one of Amtrak's East River tunnels. LIRR forces worked throughout the overnight and morning to re-rail and clear the derailed cars. Amtrak forces are assessing track damage and making repairs to the track and switches at the derailment site. Check Service Status for latest updates.

"What the heck is that ? ?"

Repeat, like in the language of an artillery spotter.

Installed at approach to switch points is an extra piece of track stuff that channels the center of the wheel approaching the points to the center of the rail, intending that the flange doesn't contact the switch point, but that past the points the flange imparts the diverging motion.

Dun'no....maybe....
