Bonas

It seems that despite the USSR being the largest country on earth that its Pop Denisty is low compared to China...The fact that Stalin killed 20 million of his own people did not help either

Stalin's deaths are a bit exaggerated they include people who were killed in the war as well.

Russia is a vast country even without the various Republics lost with the break up of the Soviet Union. The nations highway system very underdeveloped  compared tob the United States or Western Europe.  The most developed part of the system is in European Russia particuarly around Moscow. For example:

From http://www.ask.com/wiki/M10_highway_(Russia)?qsrc=3044

"The M10 is a federal highway in Russia connecting the country's two largest cities,Moscow and Saint Petersburg, and continuing to the border with Finland. Other than in the vicinity of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, the M10 is basically a two-lane highway (one lane for each direction), with an occasional third centre lane to allow overtaking or for left-turning traffic at intersections."  ---- The distance is approx 700km  (435 miles)

Unless there has been a very recent change, it is not possible to drive from Moscow to the Pacific Coast on paved roads.  The railroads are the primary means of land transportation. However there are huge areas of the country not on the national  road system or served by rail and the roads and railroads generally serve the same places.

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.
