Abe Lincoln did have a job before him more difficult than the job that faced George Washington. And when he left Springfield he asked his neighbors to pray that the Lord would guide him as he didn't know what he would do. Had Lincoln not been elected President, had William Seward who should have gotten the Republican nomination won or had Stephen Douglas, the Democratic nominee won I think the nation would have divided. Abe kept us together.
