Amtrak will provide modified Northeast Regional service between Boston and New Haven, Conn., and between Newark, N.J., and points south, on Thursday, November 1. Amtrak will also operate Shuttle service trains between Springfield, Mass., and New Haven, Keystone Service trains between Harrisburg, Penn., and Philadelphia, and Downeaster service trains between Boston and Portland, Maine, along with additional overnight services to and from the Northeast.Amtrak is continuing to remove water from tunnels in order to make repairs to track, signal and power systems under the Hudson and East rivers and to restore service to and from Penn Station in New York City. Amtrak is planning to operate modified service to and from New York City on Friday, November 2, with schedules to be announced on Thursday, November 1.In the meantime, there will be no Northeast Regional service between Newark and New Haven and no Acela Express service for the length of the Northeast Corridor on Thursday, November 1. Other service plans, full and partial service, for Thursday, November1:
Canceled on Thursday, November 1, is the Empire Service between New York City and Buffalo/Niagara Falls, the Adirondack (Trains 68 & 69) to and from Montreal, Québec, Canada, and the Ethan Allen Express (Trains 290 & 291) to and from Rutland, Vt., due to track damage south of Albany-Rensselaer, N.Y.The following services are also canceled for Thursday, November 1:

Amtrak will also be providing updates on its Facebook.com/Amtrak and Twitter.com/Amtrak pages.Amtrak will update this statement by Thursday evening, November 1."
Water did not come that high at that point that the A train would be drowned. NJTransit.com has pictures on their site right now showing the tracks on the west side. Only the River Line light rail is operating from Walter Rand Transportation Center to Trenton with half hourly service...and many NJT bus routes will be activated tomorrow. MNRR is operating from Mt. Kisco to GCT on the Harlem Line, and Stamford to GCT on the New Haven Line tomorrow. LIRR has hourly service from Jamaica to Atlantic Avenue Brooklyn for bus transfer to Manhatten but doesn't say what service there is or will be from the East to Jamaica. SEPTA is operating but with some delays. Amtrak has select service from Newark south and west with nothing on the Corridor north of Newark or south of Boston. Lake Shore Boston to Chicago only. Other trains from the north and west terminate at Albany.

Henry -- a question about NYP. Often when I was there on a platform near the west end I could hear the 8th ave subway run overhead on a bridge over the platform tracks.. Since I do not know the elevation of the subway at that point or for that matter the elevation of NYP tracks I was wondering if the subway was above sea level; close to sea level; or not ? Never noticed any water driping down from the subway to NYP platforms.
That could certainly a possible source of flood water to the NYP platforms?.
MNRR only has service from N. White Plains to GCT on the Harlem line. Amtrak from the south to Newark, NJ. LIRR from Atlantic Ave and Jamaica but probably diesel only.
Metro North Harlem line partial service restored (I wonder if electric or dual-power):

Amtrak will provide modified Northeast Regional service between Newark, N.J., and points south, on Wednesday, October 31, including restoring Virginia service to Lynchburg, Richmond and Newport News. Amtrak will also operate Keystone Service trains between Harrisburg, Penn., and Philadelphia, and modified Downeaster service trains between Boston and Portland, Maine, along with some overnight services to and from the Northeast. However, as in the case of other tunnel owners and operators in New York City, Amtrak is removing water and making repairs to track, signal and power systems within its tunnels under the Hudson and East rivers. The amount of water intrusion into the tunnels is unprecedented – as was the storm itself – so a date for restoration of Amtrak service directly to/from New York Penn Station from either the north or south is not available at this time. Therefore, there will be no Northeast Regional service between Newark and Boston and no Acela Express service for the length of the Northeast Corridor on Wednesday, October 31. Also, at Newark Penn Station, there will be no connecting service to New York City. Also canceled on Wednesday, October 31, is the Empire Service between New York City and Buffalo/Niagara Falls, the Adirondack to and from Montreal, Québec, Canada, and the Ethan Allen Express to and from Rutland, Vt., due to track damage south of Albany-Rensselaer, N.Y.Other service plans, full and partial service, for Wednesday, October 31:
The following trains are also canceled Wednesday, October 31:
Customers are encouraged to monitor Amtrak.com/alerts and those Northeast Corridor passengers on Acela Express, Northeast Regional or Keystone Service trains can follow @AmtrakNEC on Twitter to be notified when updates are posted on Amtrak.com. Amtrak will also be providing updates on its Facebook.com/Amtrak and Twitter.com/Amtrak pages.
Amtrak will update this statement by Wednesday evening, October 31.
Passengers who have paid but choose not to travel due to this service disruption can receive a refund or a voucher for future travel. Some tickets booked online that have not yet been printed can be modified or canceled on Amtrak.com or by using the free Amtrak mobile app.

Amtrak regrets any inconvenience. This information is correct as of the above time and date. Information is subject to change as conditions warrant. Schedule information and train status updates are available at the Amtrak.com home page.
There is currently zero power north of 59th Street in the Park Avenue tunnel, so Amtrak and Metro North cannot go in or out of Grand Central Terminal.
Will Amtrak get alot of Money for the Storm Damages from the Feds?
John WR ... I see there is no service between New York and Boston. It should be possible for Amtrak to come into Grand Central Terminal just as the New Haven did for many, many years...

I was thinking about Amtrak using GCT also, but then I remembered that while NH electrics were equipped with pans and 3rd rail shoes (both over and under-running), Amtrak's are not. They would need something like an FL9 beyond the cat.
MNRR controls to New Haven and they are having all kinds of troubles with trees and downed wires along with flooded tracks and washout...it has been slow going getting around. Likewise, west or south out of NYP has been a problem, too, for the same reasons. Another, not mentioned, is the lack of electric power even if the tracks were cleared and all wires up; the power companies are not up and running to supply the electricity. Also, salt water. Sea surges up the Hudson, up the Hackensack and Passaic Rivers, all along the NJ Shore and all four sides of Long Island and Manhattan into the subways and underground tunnels for trains, sewers, electricity, water, gas, steam, rats, and people too, salt water, not fresh water, is causing heretofore unexperenced conditions and problems. And, by the way, the lower level GCT tracks are used by MNRR during rush hours and for yard space. Power is also not on in all parts of Manhattan and many places in NJ or elsewhere in the Metropolitan area. I really don't think we'll have a good picture until sometime over the weekend or early next week nor a complete picture until the middle of November.
Thanks for the Amtrak news release, Streak. I had never heard of the gates on the North River Tunnels until you just mentioned it. However, it is clear they were never used. As many times as I have taken the train into Manhattan I've never seen anything that remotely resembled gates either at the North Bergen portal or the yard outside of Penn Station.
I see there is no service between New York and Boston. It should be possible for Amtrak to come into Grand Central Terminal just as the New Haven did for many, many years. Today the tracks in GCT's lower concorse are not even used. However, I know there is no electric power south of New Haven and I suspect bridges have been damaged along the Shore Line.
New Yorkers who want to go south should be able to get a bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal to Newark Penn Station.
henry6 I heard elsewhere around here that the flood gates were inoperable for some reason...possible from never having been used. Or tested. I mean, who would have thunk?

Henry -- On train orders web site some one posted that PRR built something that interferred with the gates. Hope someone can confirm or deny as I find that hard to believe but stranger things do happen.? after irene you would have thought the gates would have been made operational?.
John; AMTRAK has released a modified schedule NEWARK - AND SOUTH. announced north river tunnels flooded and will provide no service north of Newark.

my question is ---- what happened to the north river tunnel flood gates that PRR initially installed on the north river tunnels ? don't know if there was ever gates on east river tunnels ? bulletin also said some flooding in east river tunnels.
John WR Bluestreak reports the tracks at Trenton, New Jersey were underwater during hurricane Irene in 2011. I can find nothing about Trenton Station right now. John

John
John -- although no service bulletins yet from AMTRAK their website is allowing limited reservations on NEC between WASH - PHL ( no ACELA ). Trenton and north no reservations. This could indicate either / or problems with Trenton station or as a couple reports ( no verification ) of some flooding of the North river tunnels. Anyone with information ? MNRR was reported as having no power on the new haven line. CAT and / or signals ? anyone?
Tuesday, 5:30. I've been looking for news about Amtrak's northeast corridor service but can find none except, on Amtrak's website, an announcement from 9:30 this morning saying Amtrak is assessing the damage.
However, Metro North reports there is no electric power between New York and New Haven. The New York Metropolitan Transit Authority reports all 7 of its East River tunnels are flooded. Amtrak also has an east river tunnel but no specific reports about it. Finally, a 12 foot tidal surge washed 24 railroad tank cars from the tracks onto the New Jersey Turnpike north of Newark.
There has been comments on other posts about AMTRAK discontinuing service earlier than necessary. IMHO may have ended not soon enough. Until we have a report of the damage to fixed structures & equipment there will be no final conclusion. If AMTRAK had enough time to remove sensitive electronics out of harms way then the shut down was very timely. y
Here are some items that AMTRAK may have considered as well as others. This may be looked on as hind sight but some items were in my mind even after Irene. In the past my airline did not evacuate airplanes in time and some planes were out of service for weeks.
!. The thanksgiving rush is just one week away.
2. Any equipment that got stranded might be subject to water damage or worse salt water damage.
3.AMTRAK does not have any spare rolliing stock equipment that could fill in for damaged rolling stock especially with thanksgiving so close. The situation today is not like just after WW-2 when there was an abundant amount of spare equipment and the spare equipment could be put into service if some was damaged.
4. Evidently there is a lot of salt water damage to signals and switch machines on NJ transit ( Hoboken per Oltmann ) and may be as well on AMTRAK. With all the rolling stock servicable AMTRAK and the commuter agencies can straight line most outlying CPs to maintain service and provide switch tenders around the major terminals.
5. Track and platform Flooding occurred at Trenton when Irene hit so a very vulnerable spot on the NEC.
6. The few persons inconvienced by the shut down will be a minimum of what persons may not have been able to travel ( thanksgiving & christmas ) if much rolling stock had been damaged.
7. Loss of ridership and revenue in the future must be considered.
8, I read elsewhere that north river tunnels have flood gates that cannot work. do you have any information ? If that is true the possibility that NYP tracks, platforms, esculators, etc which I understand are below sea level suddenly flooding and putting equipment and passengers in peril.
Same cancellations of AMTRAK for tuesday

wonder if the NEC is cancelled due to the flooding problems at Trenton during Irene ? Hope the Port jervis line, Vermonter, adarondiac lines do not get washed out ?
sandy has caused some amtrak complete LD train cancellations and others that will operate only south of WASH.
