The switch appears to be a hand throw switch from the picture i saw in the Trib. Makes me wonder what that switch was doing open. And if it was open why didnt the PTC pick it up. One other thought that came to my mind, switch was thrown and then "jumpered" to show a clear (aka sabatoge?). But that would take someone that would know what they are doing. Also thought about a "picked" switch, but i dont think the train would have gone in like it did, usually the equipment goes two directions.
The new signal system was to enable 110 mph operation on the line. Good thing this mishap did not happen at that speed. PTC might not be ready system-wide by deadline.
Amtrak is just a few bad ordered cars away from a serious equipment shortage in the Midwest, IMO. Each new derailment they have risks their ability to cover existing schedules with proper levels of equipment in back up.
A false clear is about as serious a situation that can exist. It will be very interesting to see what the NTSB comes up with as the cause of this one.
This incident could be a very big deal in that it is reported to invlove a false clear in the new and very fancy signal system ATK has on this line. Good news is there is no freight railroad to blame for this.

Interesting problem the train ran into a switch aligned into a siding after receiving a clear signal.
