AMTRAK'S 40th ANNIVERSARY TOUR TRAIN
Posted by railfanjohn on Sunday, March 18, 2012 8:17 PM

I just toured Amtrak's 40th anniversary tour train Saturday (3-17) at Spencer, N.C.  I see on AMTRAK'S web site that the train's next public stop will be in Charleston, S.C. next weekend (3-24 thru 3-25).  Someone at Spencer told me the train was going from there (Spencer) to Charlotte, N.C.

Does anyone know the exact route the train will take from Spencer to Charleston?  Does it operate only over current Amtrak routes?  I live near Columbia, S.C. and the train will not be stopping here.  I was wondering, however, if it might pass through here during the week on its way to Charleston?  I can easily see a routing from Spencer to Charlotte then down the NS 'R' line to Columbia, thence the NS 'SC' line Columbia to Charleston.  These two routes are Freight Only!  If they were to use only current Amtrak routes I would imagine the train would have to backtrack all the way to Selma, N.C. to get to the CSX  'A' line, which is an Amtrak route, and would go from there all the way to Charleston.  This seems like a very long trip "out of the way".  Amtrak's web site gives no information on specific routes the train takes between its public stops.

Any information about possible routes for this special train would be appreciated.
