THanks, DMUinCT for the picture, and thanks, Alan F for the information.

The new Niantic River bridge is a whole new higher bridge built on a new, straighter, approach.  The cut over should be easy and fast when ready.

The two bridges that were/are to be replaced are on the NEC and the Acelas travel over them to go from New Haven to Boston. There are fewer Acelas on the schedule on weekends and only a few on Saturdays. There are no Acelas on the schedule going between NYP and BOS in the shutdown window, so there are none to be canceled.

There will likely be another shutdown similar to this next year when they are ready to switch to the new Niantic River draw bridge.

Harbor Bridge (CT) replacement question
Posted by aegrotatio on Friday, November 4, 2011 7:28 PM

I have a question about this weekend's Harbor Bridge (CT) replacement and Amtrak schedules.  It says that several Northeast Regionals are cancelled between 4:00 PM Saturday and 12:00 PM Sunday, but it also says that no Acela Express trains are cancelled.

Does Acela use this bridge?  Are they accommodating Acela trains in some special way?
