South African trains
Posted by Fawsten Gayle on Monday, November 1, 2010 3:52 AM

Hello there, I would like to introduce myself. I am a retired British citizen with a long term interest in North American railroads of all kinds, and passenger trains worldwide.

During the eighties I traveled extensively, in Canada and the US. In 2008 I repeated my trans Canada journey.

Last year I visited South Africa. While there I rode the Premier Classe Trains from Johannesburg to Durban, and Cape Town to Johannesburg. Durban to Cape Town was by Shosholoza Meyl tourist train. All these trains are all sleeper. The Premier Classe are more luxurious, and air conditioned; meals are included in the fare. Shosholoza Meyl are more basic, but the fares are ridiculously cheap.

I would like to recommend South African trains, but, because of the passenger service being given a load of unreliable locomotives, they have had to cancel nearly all their services. The only trains running at the moment, are Premier Classe, Johannesburg to Durba and Cape Town.

Feel free to contact me for more information.

What about the Capitol Park Engine Sheds at Pratoria, which was privately owned with a good collection of modern steam and passenger equipment to go with it, and a lot of private tourist operatons from that base?
