Thank You For Riding Amtrak!

I made a round trip to Fort Edward, NY on Sunday, May 16, 2010. I rode the Adirondack Northbound and The Ethan Allen Express on the return. While waiting for the train to arrive at Fort Edward I picked up a route guide for the Vermonter / Ethan Allen Express. The guide has a published date of 2005. It says that Bellows Falls, VT is home to Steamtown USA. The route map for the Ethan Allen Express shows Springfield, MA sitting between Rhinecliff, NY and Hudson, NY. Ooooops! As a positive note, both trains were clean and on-time both ways. Thank you for riding Amtrak!

Well, Bellows Falls WAS the home of Steamtown USA - just as a place that is now an empty lot WAS my childhood home in Da Bronx!

Somehow, the people who compile information for Federal entities are always somewhat behind the curve - like the Federal study that came out in the late 90s that claimed that Orlando, FL, was a seriously depressed area in dire need of a Federal transfusion.

It was based on statistics for the ten years BEFORE Disney started building, and was at least 20 years out of date when published.

IIRC, I visited Steamtown in 2005 - in Scranton, PA.

As for riding Amtrak, I would - if it served my home city and anyplace else I want to visit.  The nearest Amtrak stations aren't even in the STATE I live in.

Most times the Ethan Allen goes up out of New Haven over Air Line Jct and into Windsor Locks/Hartford and into Springfield. A friend of mine actually operated the train for a brief part of it's route.

Steamtown is indeed in Scranton and a wonder to behold so I am told.

Chuck, sadly it is true that Nevada is not served by Amtrak but it's also not seeing a lot of service on the UP tracks either... I recall seeing more train service on TV than in real life while I was in Las Vegas. Sad

I rode Amtrak from Greensboro, NC to Washington, DC.(The Carolinian) and rode the Crescent back to Greensboro. Both experiences were very good. I would do it again. The price was $131.00 round trip. That sure beat what the airlines would have charged me. The train going to Washington, DC arrived on time, where as the one back to Greensboro was about one hour late. But, let me tell you, it sure beat going through the airports, with all of the waiting and security check points. The only bad part was taking my luggage with me. It was hard to get down the aisle. However, the seats were comfortable and clean. And there was a lot of room for my feet. I still preferred my recent rail trip from London (Paddington Station) to Windsor Castle and London to Oxford. The US needs to develop more rail service like that.

I enjoyed Steamtown when I visited it 2003 (stayed 2 nights at the Clarion).  Rode the excursion to Moscow.  Also rode the car at the Electric City Trolley Museum next door.
