Wayward Amtrak at Galesburg
Posted by GoneSouth on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 4:37 PM

From the Galesburg webcam, you can see in the distance what appears to be an Amtrak train with two lead units, four passenger cars, and a trailing unit.  It is located in the curve between the depot and three leads heading into the yard.  Does any one know why this is sitting there?  I have viewed the camera off and on for the last three days and it was there.  Yesterday there was a BNSF special sitting on the siding at the depot, but that is gone today.  Just curious.

I've noticed the same train sitting there during daytime hours also. I think Amtrak has, possibly, changed a schedule or two. I wonder if the Galesburg to Quincy portion of train 381/382, the Carl Sandburg, has been dropped for some reason.Train 381 arrives in Galesburg about 10:17 AM and now just pulls ahead a half mile or so after passengers detrain and sits during the day. I haven't noticed what time it pulls back to the station, though. I assume sometime in the afternoon and goes back to Chicago. They are using the track nearest the station now, instead of the far track. I wonder if service has been cut back, either by Amtrak or State of Illinois? Isn't this one of the trains that is operated with some State funds?

Also, a recent change has been the addition of the trailing engine, although I think it's a non-powered unit (an old F40Ph?). The large side door into the carbody tells me it's one of those older modified units called "cabbages", with the engine removed, and baggage stored in there, if needed. The train can still be operated from this end, the "cab", but the engine on the other end does the real work (provides the power).  This done so they don't have to turn the train?

Just my thoughts and assumptions, but I could be all wrong.

Thanks for the information guys.  This helps.  Haven't been able to check from the webcam today, someone has it pointing at the Depot track area.

I saw a travel advisory (don't have the link) that due to trackwork, the Carl Sandburg, #381 & #382 would terminate in Galesburg and passengers would be bused to Quincy.
