Kansas City Amtrak Parking
Posted by william6 on Saturday, April 25, 2009 11:49 AM

I was recently at the Kansas City train station just to watch some trains from the Freight House Bridge, when I decided to inquire about long term parking for Amtrak travelers. I was told $10.00 per day. Seems a little pricey to me, so does anyone know any other nearby parking lots/ramps for less money per day? Just trying to save a few bucks. Thanks. Bill

1st train ride was at 18 months old...and still riding the rails!

I just returned from a trip on the Southwest Chief from Kansas City to Chicago. We were gone for five days and parked two vehicles in long-term parking. According to the sign we should have paid $50 per car. However, the credit card reader did not work -- woudln't accept any of my cards or my father's cards -- so we pushed the attendant button and the attendant on call told us to just go ahead. So we got it for free! I don't know of any other good location around Union -- you might be able to find a spot on the north side of the tracks near the new lofts and restaurants area, but it seems to be heavily patrolled. Probably better to just pay the $10 and know your car is probably safe -- and you might get out for free like I did!

There really aren't any good free/cheap parking options at KC Union Station.  For overnight trips I have taken to catching the River Runners in Independence, MO, where there is free parking.  It lacks the granduer of departing Union Station, but it's hassle-free.  If you're travelling on the SW Chief, I think parking at Union Station is the only practical option as the next station stops up and down the line are quite a ways.

Gates are up on weekends, so if you are there all week and arrive back on  Saturday or Sunday, it is free. Not bad.

Union Station  has cut back on so many staff that there is really nobody there to collect.

$10 a day seems cheap in comparison to a lot of airport parking charges.

In some cases one can spend more in parking and ground transportaion for an airline trip than you spend on the air fare.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!
