Not going on a trip with the Southwest Chief right now nor anytime soon, I'm afraid, but I've wanted to ever since I heard the train existed as the "Super Chief" and since (ca. 1965).
Part of what brought my question to mind is that occasionally people after church, etc., knowing I'm a Railfan, ask me about connecting from WB Amtrak L-D trains that arrived from Chicago to the West Coast. I tell them there's an element of uncertainty in anything, and that some lines have better records than ever. There's a type of person who is perfectly happy with travel until the train gathers lateness, and then our friend gets all kinds of mad, letting it poison his trip.
Me, I'd be on vacation and wouldn't be too upset if it were two or three hours late. But no more.
And that alone might disqualify me. We hear of the glitches, but I don't know where to look to see Amtrak's actual statistics on lateness.

There are Pacific Surfliner departures for San Diego at 8:30 AM, 9:40 AM, 11:10 AM, 12:25 PM, 2:00 PM, etc. Holding for connection is unlikely based on the frequency of trains.
Thanks! - al
Will Amtrak hold any of the trains (that used to be) called "San Diegans" at L.A./Union to accommodate passengers who need to transfer from L-D trains running late??
Was thinking primarly of the Southwest Chief.
