New Amtrak schedule between Washington DC and Florida
Posted by curtissjoyce on Saturday, November 10, 2007 7:31 AM
On the national news this past week, my wife told me she heard about a new train with new equipment running between Washington DC and Florida with full meals and extra accommodations.  I can't seem to find anything about this on the forums.  Did anyone else hear something like this?  She wants to take a vacation now.

I believe the only new cars on the Autotrain are the ones which carry the vehicles.

As for the new train to Florida, I guess this is what your wife heard about-

I thought I heard that had been cancelled.

nanaimo73 is correct.

The press played up the Grand Luxe tours between Washington, DC and Miami, FL in a big way when it was first announced. I made reservations for Madge and myself as soon as I found the web site and was called two weeks ago with the information that all the DC-FL trips had been cancelled due to low advanced reservations. It was supposed to be our Wedding Anniversary trip! So we are going to the Big Apple for a few days instead. Opera, Broadway Play if the strike ends in time, meal at the Oyster Bar in Grand Central, etc.

This opens up a world of curiosity for me.  Does Grand Luxe run its own motive power, or are the cars simply coupled to the SB Autotrain, Meteor, whatever?

Is Grand Luxe's rolling stock new and if so, who built it?  - a. s.

Grand Luxe's rolling stock are rebuilds. the stock has been around for several decades. The trains were going to be run on the back of Amtrak's Silver Service. Several of GrandLuxe's other runs have been run with Amtrak crews, or under Amtrak's legal "permission" to operate on the freight RR's.
