TRYING TO FIND OUT ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA TRAIN THE CAROLINIAN

Hi 

I want to buy a train that would be similar to the Carolinian in North Carolina.  It is a passenger train, and I want to take my Mom on a trip.  However, my question is what type of train should I buy that is very similar to the way that one looks?  I want to buy one car that would be similar to that one, would it be the amtrack passenger car?

  Look at railpictures.net and do a search. Not sure about which pics will come out, may or may not tell. There is another site that has RR pictures on it but don't know their name.

Since it sounds like you're talking about the current Carolinian being run under Amtrak, according to the Amtrak Timetable, they use Viewliner equipment for the sleeping accomodations. These trains are normally made up of 2 P42DC locomotives, a heritage baggage car, 2 Viewliner Sleepers, a Heritage Dining Car, and several (usually 4) Amfleet Coaches. Some will include an Amfleet Food Service (lounge) car.

For modelling it, I can only advise you for HO scale. The locos, and both heritage cars are available from Athearn. The Viewliner Sleepers and Food Service (lounge) car are available from Walthers, and the Amfleet Coaches are available from both Bachmann and Walthers.

The Carolinian is a day train.  Coaches and Cafe/Dinette car only.  No sleepers or Heritage diner.

Your train consist is a good description of the Crescent, though!

The Carolinian is pulled by a single GE-P42.  It usually leaves Charlotte with a baggage car, a business class car, a snack car and 3 coach cars in that order.

It is operated jointly by Amtrak and North Carolina Department of Transportation using some pretty old Amtrak cars, but they seem to be well maintained, but not washed regularly.

It runs once a day in each direction between Charlotte and New York City.

There is another jointly operated train, The Piedmont, that runs only between Charlotte and Raleigh once a day.

The Amtrak operated Crescent runs along the same route between New Orleans and New York City via Atlanta, Charlotte, DC, Philadelphia, etc.  That is a full service train with sleepers and dining car, etc.
