Hasn't this always been an issue during the summer for LD trains and sleepers with week of travel bookings?

In the past, the Capitol Limited between Washington and Chicago generally ran with seven or eight cars - superliners. At present it is running with four cars, three for passenger occupation. I believe the pasenger cars are a coach, a lounge and a sleeper with a baggage car. With that limited of a consist, it doesn't take much activity to fill 90% of the available passenger space.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!

A lot of flights and hotels are sold out, too. Everyone must be incompetent.
Seriously - are you ok? You seem to be having a tantrum every day about something amtrak related.
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.
The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer, any other railroad, company, or person.t fun any
One would think being sold out is a good thing.

The Texas Eagle has been running with a sleeper, a diner or lounge car, and two or three coaches. Before the pandemic, it had a transition sleeper, a regular sleeper, a dinning car, Sightseer lounge car, and three coaches.
The train usually runs with a diner/lounge car, but twice in as many weeks the diner was replaced by a Sightseer lounge car. Given that approximately 85% of its passengers are in coach, that makes more sense to me. How they handled the meals for the first class passengers is unknown.
I believe the sleeper has 14 economy rooms. If I am correct that the train has four onboard service employees, that means four of the rooms are dedicated to the crew.
For a "thinking about it trip" from Temple to Dallas on July 24th, with a return on July 26th, the northbound train is 40% full; the southbound train is 60% booked. The price of an economy room is $132 northbound; it is $182 southbound. The fare for coach is $10 northbound; it is $19 southbound. Before the pandemic, an economy room from TPL to Dallas return usually was $84 each way.

Why does it cost more for the southbound trip?

If you are running 12 cars and 1000 paying passengers being FULL can be viewed as good. When you are 3 cars and 100 passengers being sold as FULL, not so much.
