Many industries are reporting lack of chips to finish constructing their various products. The auto industry is actually shutting down a few assembly lines. Has anyone heard if these shortages are affecting various rail car builders as well ? Siemens so far does not seem to be having any problems ?
Seeing lead times improving in the communications area.

Which leads to the question, why do we measure work in horsepower rather than manpower. I am certain somewhere along the line someone has measured the amount of WORK a man can do in one hour, just like the amount of work a horse can do in one hour has been defined.
Wouldn't a 100 Horsepower vehicle sound more impressive if it was 1000 or 1500 Manpower?

You couldn't call it MANpower; it would have to be HUMANpower, or PERSONpower.
At least horsepower is gender neutral.
Getting back to the original topic, producing a packaged integrated circuit involves more than the production of the die (piece of silicon wafer) as it also includes packaging. Any foulup in the supply chain can cause a slowdown in delivery. Also keep in mind that the car manufacturers use "Automotive Qualified" components which require special processing.
The real shortage isn't so much chips as in IC's, but chips as in MLCC's (Multi Layer Ceramic Capacitors), which some have close to a year of lead time. This is particularly bad for the car makers as "Automotive Qualified" require dielectrics good for a very wide temperature range.

I've been a little surprised that the U.S. manufactures so many chips. I guess I thought that was China.
Actually, China is the number one importer of U.S. made chips.
I couldn't find any numbers about Texas.
Note: I'm far from knowledgeable about this, so if I'm wrong which is likely, have some mercy.
