Sounds as if the bridge pier may have been structurally deficient, internally and not visible to exterior inspection.  Or the contractors placed stresses on it that it was not designed to handle.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

Another "Oh S--T!" Moment. Good thing no train was there or approaching.

Looks like somebody figured out a quick way to bring it down.

Hey, can you imagine the light show there might have been if there were electrified third rails down there?

#5 left Glenwood Springs at 9:49 last night (7:56 late) and arrived in Salt Lake City at 6:52 this morning (7:47 late). It is expected to arrive in Sacaramento at 7:19 this evening (5:06 late).

Johnny, Train No.5 that you refer to lost over 6 hours between Lincoln, NE and Hastings,NE. Surely there were other reasons for the delay other than the bridge collapse at Glenwood Springs. Anyone know the reason for the delay?

1st train ride was at 18 months old...and still riding the rails!
