Those peole who boarded at Reno may well have come from the Bay Area in those two cars, and their fares may have covered the additional costs (use of the cars and the lounge attendant and switching charges)?

I ride first class when it is available. This is not a "rich mans" fare. If I was to drive across country alone the cost of hotel/motel rooms, stops for 3 squares a day, driving costs ect. would cost much more than a place to sleep, eat and enjoy scenery on the train. Amtrak does not serve $100 dollar meals in the dinner. Good food yes, expensive food no. As far as attendants in the sleepers go, they are quite often difficult to be found as they seem to wander off. The cost of one attendant can not be much or anymore than it costs for the manpower to work the coaches.

In my humbel opinion it is all GOP politics and very poor management at the upper levels of Amtrak who do not seem to care about running the trains.
