Crayon lines on a map <> service.

Sure, Amtrak had a nice looking map with some pretty expensive and nearly completely useless once-a-day trains in 1978.

What happened from 1971 to 1978 was that LD routes got added.   What should have happened was that the LD routes should have been pruned some more and corridor services added.

We are living with the legacy of that error even now...

Define shrinking service and state one reference date.  Amtrak, in effect, did not shrink the service on its first day but the non participating railroads did.  There have been many additions and subtractions and alterations since that day one.  I bet there are more services today than back then...more people riding, that's for sure.

RIDEWITHMEHENRY is the name for our almost monthly day of riding trains and transit in either the NYCity or Philadelphia areas including all commuter lines, Amtrak, subways, light rail and trolleys, bus and ferries when warranted. No fees, just let us know you want to join the ride and pay your fares. Ask to be on our email list or find us on FB as RIDEWITHMEHENRY (all caps) to get descriptions of each outing.

All you have to do is take a mid-70s TT and compare to now.

Specifically check:

All the California trains.

NY-Albany

NEC south of Phila and north of NY

Harrisburg line

DC to Richmond.

Portland to Seattle.

That's a start.... "Resident Amtrak Hater" what about it?

Who is this source?  I've never heard of them and there is no information about them.  I would dismiss anything they say out of hand until I know more.

Hardly trolling just pointing out flaws in Amtrak. Enough with the tinfoil hat accusations and back them up with evidence.

Do you mean that you think Amtrak should be abandoned?  Or do you mean that you thing we should make the investment necessary for high speed passenger rail?

Both. I think we should make major investment into passenger rail and get rid of Amtrak in its current form.

When you present links as above and close with a clearly inflammatory signature and then cannot or will not answer some specific points of order from Don Oltmann, the conclusion that you are merely trolling does not mandate a serious response.
