Public transportation race

Is there such a thing as a public transit race in the U.S.?

To highlight the needs of public transport, especially rail transit, could a group of racers start in cities on the East Coast equidistant from a target city on the West Coast and make a race out of it?

The goal would be to use non-aircraft mass transit and get there faster than the competitors.

Second place for the person who spends the least amount of money.

Could it be organized? Would anyone care?

Speed is not the only consideration when traveling.

Cost, comfort, convenient time of departure and/or arrival, frequency, local transportation at the destination, the ability to take everything that you will need with you, and ability to work while enroute are all part of the equation.

Each traveler makes his (her) decision based on one or more of those factors that are important to his particular circumstance.

Sure, if some group with time, access to the travel agencies' data network and nothing better to do wanted to garner some (almost) free air time on the local TV news.

Would anyone care?

BINGO!!!  If it DID show up on the news, that's when Joe Couch Potato would go to the fridge for another beer.  Sorry, ~Ignatius.
