Is there such a thing as a public transit race in the U.S.?

To highlight the needs of public transport, especially rail transit, could a group of racers start in cities on the East Coast equidistant from a target city on the West Coast and make a race out of it?

The goal would be to use non-aircraft mass transit and get there faster than the competitors.

Second place for the person who spends the least amount of money.

Could it be organized? Would anyone care?

~Ignatius
