Surf Line, L.A. - S.D.

When I request a Los Angeles - San Diego trip Sept 15 and a San Diego - Los Angeles trip Sept 16 on www.amtrak.com, the only options it provides are bus trips - no trains.  Why is that?

Looks like the RR between LA and San Diego is out of service that weekend.  Amtrak.com shows Surfliners north of LA, but only busses south that weekend.  Also, shows train the prev. Friday and following Monday.  Sounds like BNSF is doing some work on the line, perhaps?

I thought BNSF sold the line south of Fullerton to the transit authority and retained rights to operate freight trains, which are almost exclusively at night. If I am mistaken please advise.

You're right (the transit authority is Metrolink).  Metrolink dispatches this line as well.  And yes, the freights are mostly at night.  But there are two unique local switchers for both BNSF and UP that travel on the line around noon time.

I believe that is the case...there is a ~ 1-mile segment between the cities of Santa Ana and Orange where the line is still single track.  This is where it goes on an S-curve beneath Ca-22 (Garden Grove Freeway) and next to Lincoln Ave. in the northern portion of Santa Ana.  The line is probably closed to cut in the double track here.  You can try www.railpac.org for details, or else the Metrolink website at www.metrolinktrains.com
