The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) on Dec. 1 began utility work on the Phase I of the East San Fernando Valley, Calif., light rail line, with a Groundbreaking Ceremony.

 

Included are 11 new stations; substations;a maintenance facility, a yard,andadministration, operation, and support services facilities. LRV inspections, body and heavy repairs, and cleaning and washing  will be performed there. IVan Nuys, Panorama City, Arleta and Pacoima will be connected in this phase, via the median of Van Nuys Blvd.  Expected opening: 2028 - 2030.

W.A. Rasic Construction Company, Inc. of Long Beach has contract worth $9i million for Los Angeles Department of Water & Power vaults and associated conduit infrastructure relocation.  LACMTAS expects actual construction to be contracted early next year.

A2.5-mile, three-station second phase will connect Pacoima to the Sylmar/San Fernando Metrolink Station, with three stations, via San Fernando Road on LACMTA-owned is under study and preliminary design.

$1.6 billion to $2 billion are estimated for the entire project.  Street-running with local stops, essentially a recreation of the Pacific Electric line on  Van Nuys Blvd discontinued 1952.

The new line is planned to connect with the Van Nuys Metrolink/Amtrak Station in addition to the Metrolink station at Sylmar/San Fernando. It will also provide key linkages with LACMTA bus lines, including the G Line (Orange) in Van Nuys and municipally operated bus lines.

LACMTA CEO Stephanie Wiggins: “We are excited to begin delivering on our promise to bring light rail back to the Valley.  The East San Fernando Valley line will serve a critical transportation need for residents and will be an important link in a network of improvements we’re building all over the San Fernando Valley.”
