Looking at the Railroad Atlas of North America, it appears that the route East of the Eads Bridge was part of TRRA track to the Southern RR. The track coming off the bridge used to turn ENE and descend to tower G where the Pennsylvania RR & the B&O joined the TRRA. Now after the bridge, it has a high level station (East Riverfront) then it turns ESE and drops under the TRRA south of tower G. After going under the TRRA, Metrolink  turns NE and is appearantly on new ROW to where it reaches some former L&N ROW that goes through Belleville East of Belleville it swings North and East to Shiloh which looks like new ROW although there Atlas shows the Southern RR crossing the L&N near Belleville.

I took a trip  in '67 when the Monon was going to end its passenger service. Monon to Louisville and back to Mitchell where I connected to the B&O to St. Louis. We went across the Eads Bridge and through the tunnel. Close but not real tight. At St. L, I caught the PRR to Effingham and then IC back to Chicago. The PRR used the MacArthur Bridge to cross the Mississippi River.

I am trying to trace the sections E of Jackie Joyner Station to Bellville IL. I already knew about the Terminal Railroad Association tracks W of the river and the tunnel/subway  under Downtown St.L

In what alternate reality is Illinois on the 'W' side of the river?

Of course, the tunnel from the west end of the Eads Bridge under 'town' is a fascinating subject in its own right.  If I recall correctly, it stopped being used for Amtrak trains because even early Amtrak replacement power didn't have adequate running clearance ... let alone Superliners when those started to be available.

When I rode the STL transit over the Eads bridge the tunnel on the STL side was rather long and not very tall.  If memory correct it would have been a major construction project for that tunnel to be widened and made taller for just Amtrak Superliners not considering the effort for it to allow plate "H" clearances.

The tunnel is also not very wide. I had that impression the time I went in on the L&N--the flagman took the markers down just before we entered.

Without going through my collection of ETT's and finding my TRRA ETT, I believe you are right; the Eads Bridge is now used for the transit system.

I think it may be a Freudian slip because the park and ride people are threatening to 'haul' his stuff away.

Of course, it would work equally well in a Kalmbach search either way...

As far as I know, the section in Illinois converted to Metrolink is the old St. Louis Bridge Co. route from the east end of the Eads Bridge, which would have been TRRA in the Gould years.  He should be able to overlay the indication from

http://www.terminalrailroad.com/images/TRRA%20Map.pdf

on what he sees in the Open Railway Map -- and then compare that to the indicated route of the combined lines on Google Earth and the Metrolink 'physical' map.
