This could be right interesting in an unexpected way: In August - just before this convention - Phoenix is going to have a referendum on whether any more money from a special sales tax for transportation is going to be spent on the light rail system. A "No" vote will have the effect of stopping future expansion. An unknown will be the effect on the 5-mile South Central expansion - engineering is well underway and a construction manaager/ prime contractor was already selected 2 years ago. Aborting it now would mean a loss of federal funding, and likely claims for the incomplete work, lost profits, etc. There are several sources of the opposition, from community groups who don't like losing 2 lanes of the 4 of Central Ave. to those who fear gentrification to possibly anti-transit organizations sponsored by the Koch brothers. We'll just have to see how that turns out . . .
